Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, majorly known as IIT Roorkee or IIT-R, is an Institute of engineering and technology. IIT Roorkee, earlier used to known as University of Roorkee (1948-2001) as well as Thomason College of Civil Engineering (1853-1948). It was established in 1947 by lieutenant governor, Sir James Thomason. It was declared as university in the year 1949 and then changed into an IIT in the year 2001.
IIT-R consist 18 academic departments which includes, Humanities, Engineering, Applied Science, Management programs and social Sciences along with world class scientific and technological education and research. The campus is spread out in the area of 365 acres, additionally the new 10 acres campus of IIT Roorkee has been established in greater Noida, Knowledge Park II and was inaugurated on April 4th, 2011 In ranking IIT-K holds position of 401-450 internationally in QS World University Ranking 2011, whereas it holded position of 65 in QS Asian University Ranking of 2012. It ranked number 6 by India Today 2012 and number 6 by Outlook in 2011.
