Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Ropar, Ropar, Punjab

Indian Institute of Technology Ropar is an educational institute in India for higher education and it is located in the Rupnagar city of Punjab, this institute is also known as Indian Institute of Technology, Punjab. This college is among the eight new institutes that have been recently established by Ministry of Human Resource Development under Indian Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011. IIT, Ropar started its operation in the year 2008 and its starting sessions of year 2009-2009 was held in IIT Delhi but later it was transferred to the Rupnagar campus in August 2009.

In IIT Ropar the curriculum followed provides a science based engineering education that is meant to produce quality engineers, the institutes encourages the students to carry out independent works by means of research projects by going beyond classrooms, the academic program of institute follows a semester based credit system. This institute started with seven departments which included 3 engineering departments and 4 supporting departments, they all also offer Phd programs. The departments are chemistry, computer science and engineering, humanities and social sciences, mathematics, physics and school of mechanical, electrical engineering, materials and energy engineering. Admissions for the bachelor programs in this institute is done through Joint Entrance Examination whereas admissions for post graduate programs are done through GATE,CAT and JAT etc.

The institute’s campus consists five hostels which includes four hostels for boys and one for girls, these entire hostel are fully equipped for comfortable accommodation of about 550 students. There is a complete supply of water in all the hostels and all of them have water coolers and purifiers. Hostels also have the arrangements for indoor games and all the daily needs of students are taken care of within the campus. A branch of SBI is also situated inside the campus area and hostels also have high speed internet wi-fi facility. All the arrangements of medical, sports, library and security are perfectly managed inside IIT,Ropar campus.

IIT Ropar is also very active in extracurricular activities and societies are formed for music, fine arts, chess, literary, athletics etc. Events like Saaz, Sur, Torque , Symphony, Raag has been held by the music society of the institute. This institute also organizes a cultural festival every year and this festival is known as Zeitgeist. The festival was started from the year 2010 and the very first event was sponsored by Hero Honda, this festival included a special performance by Faridkot,The Band. The festival of 2011 was set with a bigger platform that included two special on stage performances of Bandish and Punjabi singer “Alfaaz” and like this every year the institution keeps on conducting successful annual fest.
