The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research is an institution of higher education and multidisciplinary research. The Institute was founded by the Government of India, Department of Science of Technology in the year of 1989. The University is located in the Jakkur area of Bangalore district in the state of Karnataka, India. The current president of the University is Professor MRS Rao while the honorary president is CNR Rao.

The University is divided into six divisions namely, Engineering Mechanics, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Educational Technology, Education Technology and Geodynamics, Chemistry and Physics of Materials and Theoretical Sciences. The University also runs off campus divisions, which are the Condensed Matter Theory and Chemical Biology divisions. The JNCASR has state of the art, computational, infrastructural and experimental facilities. The student to faculty ratio at the Institute is 4:1, enabling professors to devote personal attention to their students. The Institute currently offers Ph.D courses along with an integrated Ph.D course in Material Sciences. Being a deemed university, the Institute awards its own degrees.

The small number of students along with a strong faculty to student ratio (120 students with 40 faculty) gives the students researching here a distinct edge. Many on campus collaborations come to fruition here, such as the teamwork of a fluid dynamicist, experimental physicist and statistical mechanician to observe the flow in nanochannels and to freezing of metal droplets induced by lasers, impringed on substrate. Over a period of time, many faculty members have had their research published in various prestigious science journals such as Nature Medicine, Science, Nature, Evolution, Angewandte Chemie, Physics Review Letters and the Journal of Fluid Mechanics.
