The University of Kerala, formerly known as the University of Travancore, is a University, located in the district of Trivandrum, in Kerala, India. The University was established in 1937, by the then Maharaja of Travancore, Chithira Balarama Varma, who was by default also the first chancellor of the University. The University is especially significant, because its the 16th University to have been established in India. The University was renamed to the University of Kerala from the University of Travancore after Kerala was unified as a state in 1954. The University has multiple campuses, one in Ernakulam, another in Thiruvananthapuram and finally one in Kozhikode.

The University of Kerala supports over 2000 students including foreign and research students, while its Distance Education programme has over 7000 undergraduate and postgraduate students all over the world. The University has many study centres in emerging fields as well as established subjects such as, Kerala studies, Nanotechnology, Women’s Studies, Bioinformatics, Learning Difficulties, Gandhian Studies etc. Apart from the above, the University also has eight UIT or Universty Institute of Technologies and ten UTEC or University College of Teacher Education, both colleges offer various graduate and undergraduate programs such as BSc in Computer Science, Electronics, IT and teaching courses such as BEd. The University of Kerala has over 150 affiliated colleges in various fields. There are 17 Engineering colleges, 37 Teacher Training Colleges, 2 Law colleges, 4 medical as well as 4 ayurveda colleges, 10 nursing colleges, 4 pharma colleges, 2 fine arts colleges and 3 Dental colleges among others, that are affiliated with this University. The total number of students served directly or indirectly by the University of Kerala exceeds over 100000. A total of 41 departments function on the University campus.
