The Mahatma Gandhi University, also called the MGU or MG University, is an autonomous University, established on the 2nd of October 1983, in the district of Kottayam, Kerala. The University was formerly called the Gandhiji University, and has achieved the B+ accreditation by the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India). Over 220 colleges are affiliated with this University all over Kerala. There are other Universities in the country that are also called by the same name, namely, Mahatma Gandhi University Meghalaya and Mahatma Gandhi University Uttarakhand. Neither of these Universities have anything, save their name common.

MGU Kerala offers many academic programs across various fields. Some of these courses include, Gandhian Thought, Information Technology, International Relations and Politics, Physics, Disability Studies and Rehabilitation Sciences, Nano Science, Special Education and Rehabilitation Sciences, Rehabilitation Psychology, Behavioral Medicine and Rehabilitation, Rehabilitation Nursing, Tourism, Journalism, Chemistry, Nursing, Environmental Sciences, Hospital Administration and Disaster Management among many others. The University has also established a Centre for Advanced Research in Library and Information Science, also called CARLIS, in the year of 2010. CARLIS was established to oversee advanced research in multidisciplinary fields of technology. It offers Ph.D in course ranging from information economics, IPR issues, information administration, knowledge warehousing, information administration, digital archiving, language technologies, resource sharing networks, content management etc.

The Mahatma Gandhi University makes its presence felt not just locally, but also globally. It has over 200 affiliated colleges, 55 off campus centres within Kerala itself, 9 other centres throughout India and 8 centres globally. On an average, over 1500000 students enroll yearly in one of the 210 academic programs offered at the University.
