The National Dairy Research Institute also called the NDRI, is the premier most institute for dairy research and education in India. The research institute is located in the district of Karnal, State of Haryana, India. The National Dairy Research Institute was initially known as the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying in the year of 1923, and was located in Bangalore. Post independence the institute was renamed to the National Dairy Research Institute and was eventually moved to Karnal in 1955. The old facilities of the Institute in Bangalore still stand as a regional centre to serve in the southern states of India. In the year of 1964 an additional regional centre was established at Kalyani in the State of West Bengal to serve the eastern regions of India. In 1970 the Institute was brought under the control of Indian Council of Agricultural Research and finally the Institute was deemed to be a University in the year of 1989.
The National Dairy Research Institute offers various Ph.D or Doctorate programmes in the 12 disciplines of Dairy Chemistry, Dairy Microbiology, Dairy Technology, Animal Biochemistry, Dairy Engineering, Animal Biotechnology, Livestock Production and Management, Animal Genetics and Breeding, Animal Nutrition, Agricultural Economics, Animal Physiology and Dairy Extension Education. The University also offers various postgraduate programmes in the abovementioned fields. Various divisions of the Institute have achieved publicity throughout the world for their achievements. The University gained world renown from the their project to create the worlds first in vitro fertilized (IFV) buffalo.The world’s first and second cloned buffalos were also created at the National Dairy Research Institute.
