The Indira Gandhi National Open University, also known as IGNOU, is an autonomous, public institute of distance learning located on a road named after itself, in Maidan Garhi, New Delhi, the Capital of India. The University was established in the year of 1985 with a 20 billion rupee budget by the Government of India via the Indira Gandhi National Open University Act of 1985. IGNOU is the largest university in the whole world with over 40 million students spread across the 40 countries it operates in including Madagascar, Lesotho, Fiji, Ethiopia, France, UAE, Kuwait, Vietnam, UK, Indonesia, Malawi, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, China, Kyrgyzstan, Ghana, Sierra, Leone, Maldives, Seychelles, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia among others.

IGNOU has 21 schools spread across a network of more than 60 regional centres, over 2600 study centres and about 50 foreign centres. These schools include, School of Social Sciences, School of Humanities, School of Sciences, School of Continuing Education, School of Education, School of Management Studies, School of Engineering and Technology, School of Computer and Information Sciences, School of Health Sciences, School of Agriculture, School of Journalism and New Media Studies, School of Law, School of Gender and Development Studies, School of Interdisciplinary and Transdisciplinary Studies, School of Tourism Hospitality Service Sectoral Management, , School of Vocational Education and Training, School of Social Work, School of Extension and Development Studies, School of Translation Studies and Training, School of Foreign Languages and School of Performing and Visual Arts. These components of the University put together offer over 110 courses at degree, diploma and certificate level spread across 175 programs. The University also houses a very active research unit which was established on the 6th of October 2008.
