Indian Institute of Technology BHU Varanasi, popularly known as BHU is an institute of engineering and technology located in Varanasi, India. IIT Varanasi was established in 1919 as Banaras Hindu University, in 2012 it was designated as an Indian Institute of Technology. The campus of BHU is spread over 1,300 acres on the bank of the river Ganga and have residential and co-educational campus at its premises.
Earlier IIT Varanasi was called Banaras Engineering College (BENCO), Institute of Technology, The college of mining and metallurgy (MNMET), the college of technology (TECHNO) and Banaras Hindu University. Later on the establishment linked with Banaras Hindu University. IIT-Varanasi celebrated its first convocation in January 19th, 1919.
IIT Varanasi offers four year program of B.Tech as well as B.Pharm and five year programmes for integrated dual degree and integrated master’s degree. Admission process of IIT Varanasi is same as other IIT Institute, Student have to take Joint Entrance Examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology. The undergraduate programmes of IIT Varanasi are Integrated Dual Degree( B.Tech and M.tech), Bachelor of Pharmaceutics, Bachelor of Technology, Integrated Dual Degree (B.Pharm and M.Parm) and Integrated Master’s Degree. The academic year has been split into two semesters and each semester has duration of 20 weeks.
The postgraduate programme of IIT-Varanasi are M.Tech. in Ceramic Engineering, M.Tech. in Electronics Engineering (Microwave Engineering, Microelectronics & Communication Systems Engineering, Digital Techniques and Instrumentation) M.Tech. in Civil Engineering (Hydraulics and Water Resources Engg., Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Environmental Engineering & Transportation Engineering), M.Tech. in Mining Engineering (Rock Mechanics , Mine Environment, and Mine Planning), M.Tech. in Chemical Engineering, M.Tech. in Metallurgical Engineering (Metals and Materials Processing, Extractive Metallurgy, Alloy Technology), M.Tech. in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems, Control Systems, Electrical Machines and Drives, and Power Electronics), M.Tech. in Biomedical Engineering, M.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering (Heat Power Engineering, Machine Design, and Production Engineering), M.Tech. in Materials Science & Tech, M.Pharm. in Pharmaceutical Sciences (Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and Pharmacognosy), M.Tech. in Industrial Management, M.Tech. in Biochemical Engineering, M.Tech. in Systems Engineering. IIT BHU has 17 academic departments which includes 3 interdisciplinary school, 10 engineering departments, 1 humanities and social sciences section and 3 science departments.
Apart from these programs IIT Varanasi also offer Entrepreneurship cell, which includes programs like entrepreneurship development and awareness programs, Technology Business incubator, open learning programme in entrepreneurship and techno entrepreneurial promotion program. IIT-Varanasi organise many annual festivals, such as Prastuti, Comet, Codefest, Adhyayan, Anveshan, Spirit, Mettle, Shilp and COMET.
