Karnatak University is an autonomous public university, established by the Government of India in the region of Dharwad, state of Karnataka, India. The University was officially inaugurated in the March of 1950. The University boasts of a large campus, spread over 750 acres of pristine land near Dharwad. The administration of DC Pavate as vice chancellor from 1954 to 1967 was extremely beneficial for the University, during which period the University developed at a rapid pace. The University got recognition from the University Grants Commission of India as an institute with “potential for Excellence”. The University also happens to be the oldest University in Karnataka after the University of Mysore.
The Karnatak University offers courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The University currently has over 100000 undergraduate students and over 4200 faculty to address their needs, and over 4500 postgraduate students, with over 250 faculty to tend to them. The University has three main faculties, in social sciences, pure sciences and arts. The departments of science include the departments of Electronics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Applied Genetics, Library Science, Microbiology and Biotechnology, Botany, Chemistry, Geology, Zoology, Sericulture, Oceanography, Marine Biology, Statistics etc. The Social Science departments of the University include the departments of Economics, Commerce, Political Science, Sociology, Gandhian Studies, Law, Anthropology, Education, Gender Studies, Military Science, Philosophy, Population Sciences, Criminology and Forensic Science, Geography among other. The art deparment of the University includes the departments of English, Sanskrit, Marathi, Hindi, Music, Yoga Studies, Foreign Languages, Folklore, Cultural studies etc. All the colleges in the area of Belgaum, Bagalkot, Haveri, Gadag, Dharwad, Uttar Kannada and Bijapur district are affiliated with the Karnatak University.
