The University of Jammu, is an autonomous public University, located in the scenic Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir. The University came into being after the Jammu and Kashmir University was officially split by an Act of State Legislature in 1969, into separate Universities, the University of Jammu and the University of Kashmir. The University campus is located near the banks of the river Tapi. Along with the main campus, the University also maintains satellite campuses at Kt\athua, Bhaderwah and Poonch.
The University of Jammu has various faculties which offer postgraduate, diploma and doctoral degrees which run under them various specialized departments and schools. The Faculty of Life Sciences runs the School of Biotechnology and the Departments of Environmental Science, Botany and Zoology. The Faculty of Oriental Languages/ Arts have under their wing the Departments of Buddhist Studies, English, Dogri, Hindi, Sanskrit, Punjabi and Urdu. The Faculty of Sciences works with the departments of Geography, Geology, Chemistry, Home Science, Remote Sensing and GIS and Physics and Electronics. Similarly the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Business Studies have under their wing the Departments of Education and Physical Education and the Departments of Hospitality and Tourism Management, The Business School and of Commerce respectively. The Faculty of Mathematical Science runs the Departments of Statistics, Computer Science and IT and Mathematics. The Faculty of Social Science runs the departments of History, Economics, Political studies, Psychology, Sociology etc. The other Faculties at the University include the Faculty of Law, of Engineering, of Medicine and of Music and Fine Arts.
